Συχνά τα ηλεκτρονικά παιχνίδια (video games) διαμορφώνουν περιβάλλοντα προσομοίωσης τα οποία είναι δημοφιλή, εξαιτίας του ελκυστικού τους προφίλ (Kulik, 2003). Τα επιμορφωτικά ψυχαγωγικά ηλεκτρονικά παιχνίδια που σχετίζονται με την ιστορία είναι υπερμεσικές προσομοιώσεις όπου ο χρήστης αναλαμβάνει ένα συγκεκριμένο ρόλο στη βάση κανόνων και των συγκεκριμένων ιστορικών περιστάσεων (Polman, 2002. Παπαστάμος, Σαμαράς & Φουρναράκης, 2005). Τα ηλεκτρονικά παιχνίδια ιστορικού περιεχομένου δεν έχουν σχεδιαστεί ως ιστορικές προσομοιώσεις, αλλά ως παιχνίδια τα οποία βέβαια έχουν μια ιστορική βάση (ενδεικτικά: Civilization, Age of Empires, SimCity, Would be Gentleman, Europa Universalis, Renaissance Florence, Migration, Oregon Trail, Elizabethan Court, Paris Peace Conference of 1919, Reacting to the Past, Revolution, Time Detectives). Έχουν σχεδιαστεί από προγραμματιστές με ιστορικά ενδιαφέροντα, αλλά όχι από ιστορικούς. Ενώ, προγράμματα όπως το «Would be Gentleman» που δημιουργήθηκε από ιστορικούς, υποστηρίζουν τη δυνατότητα των ιστορικών προσομοιώσεων να έχουν την απαραίτητη ιστορική εγκυρότητα (Taylor, 2003).

Πολλά ηλεκτρονικά παιχνίδια καλλιεργούν δεξιότητες επίλυσης προβλημάτων, καθώς εμπλέκουν στη λήψη αποφάσεων και οπτικοποιούν τις επιπτώσεις αυτών των περιπτώσεων. Αποφέρουν γνώση της περιόδου και ενθαρρύνουν την ιστορική διερεύνηση (Sampson, 2000). Η διδακτική αξιοποίηση των παιχνιδιών δείχνει αύξηση του ενδιαφέροντος, των κινήτρων και της αίσθησης του ελέγχου, βοηθά στην ενδυνάμωση της μαθησιακής διαδικασίας, η οποία καθίσταται πιο οικεία με τον κόσμο των παιδιών, αναδεικνύεται η πολλαπλότητα της παρελθοντικής πραγματικότητας και των επιδράσεών της στη ζωή τους, κατανοούνται όψεις της δημόσιας χρήσης της ιστορίας, ενώ η εφαρμογή συνεργατικών στρατηγικών προάγει τη μαθησιακή διαδικασία και λειτουργεί εξισορροπητικά μεταξύ των δύο φύλων (Squire, 2004. Squire & Barab, 2004. McMichael, 2007). 

Οι περιορισμοί των παιχνιδιών ως μαθησιακών εργαλείων (Squire, 2004) σχετίζονται με:

α) την απλουστευτική προσέγγιση της ιστορικής πραγματικότητας,

β) τη σημειωτική των παιχνιδιών,

γ) την πολιτιστική αφομοίωση των εργαλείων,

δ) την πολυπλοκότητα των παιχνιδιών, και

ε) την αντιπαλότητα της κουλτούρας των παιχνιδιών με την κουλτούρα του σχολείου.

Σημαντικό πρόβλημα με την αξιοποίηση των προσομοιώσεων και των παιχνιδιών στην ιστορική εκπαίδευση, εξαιτίας του ανοικτού χαρακτήρα αυτών των εφαρμογών, είναι τα ζητήματα του αναχρονισμού και του παροντισμού, αλλά και της σύγχυσης που μπορούν να επιφέρουν με την αδυναμία επίτευξης των πιθανών αποτελεσμάτων (Stradling, 2001:134). Επίσης, η «απόκρυψη» των ιστορικών πηγών στις οποίες βασίζονται πολλές από τις επιλογές των προσομοιώσεων δεν επιτρέπει τη σύνθεση και την αξιολόγηση των ερμηνευτικών σχημάτων που προκρίνονται (Polman, 2002).
